Diet and weight affect the risk of bipolar disorder
Data from clinical trials show that the response of patients with bipolar disorder to treatment may be affected by their weight and diet quality, including whether they consume foods that cause systemic inflammation. In this study, a total of 133 participants were randomly assigned to take nutraceuticals (compounds derived from food, such as vitamins or minerals to treat or prevent diseases or illnesses) during 16 weeks, including the anti-inflammatory amino acid n-acetyl half Cystine (NAC) or NAC alone, or placebo. The researchers measured the patient's BMI at the beginning of the study, and then measured the severity of symptoms of depression. The researchers also assessed whether the participants’ symptoms would improve in the next 20 weeks, and if so, how much.
The author states: "We found that people who consume a high-quality or anti-inflammatory diet, or who have a lower body mass index respond better to supplemental nutritional care treatments. If these results can be repeated in larger trials, then biphasic The treatment of affective disorders can be intervened through dietary regulation.
"This is an interesting work, it proves that patients with bipolar disorder may benefit from a balanced diet. However, this is an early study, we need more research to determine whether this will affect clinical practice."
